How to know when it is time...

Almost 10 years to the day, I took my last steps out of Florida Tech as their Head Coach. When I got there 3 years earlier, I was a young, ambitious coach ready for her first head coaching gig. Assuming, it would lead to a long tenure or an eventual move to a higher caliber head coaching job. So, what happened? What a great question. It is a question that goes unanswered.

Why am I telling you this? I have had 2 friends in the past few weeks leave their coaching jobs. One had a team that was a three-peat state champion in high school swimming and the other was a college coach which had swimmers at NCAAs that became All American's. My college coaching friend, is totally away from the sport, where as the high school coach still has a prosperous club team, which now he can put all his energy into. How do you know when it is time to step away? or shift directions? I do not know the answer to that besides to listen to your gut. Sometimes, your gut is different than reality, but to know your true truth, listen to your gut, it is always right.

On the other hand, I have a good friend who applied and got her first head coaching job after being an assistant college coach for several years. So, as some people are leaving their coaching journeys (or at least pausing them), and others are taking big steps forward. These coaches listened to their gut and knew what was the right move for them. A time for new beginnings and journeys.

So, What is your gut telling you? It could be saying to book that super expensive family vacation you have been holding off on, Or applying for the dream job that you talk yourself out of, Maybe it is to write the book that has been in your head for years. Your gut is never wrong. It is what you want at your true core. To be the best version of ourselves, we need to know when it is time to move forward or pivot to a new journey.
